Donald Glover And Rihanna's Guava Island Has A Release Date

f you thought Donald Glover’s dancing was epic in his “This Is America” video, wait until Guava Island drops. Hype around the film, in which Glover stars alongside Rihanna, started to build when a trailer was captured by an audience member at New Zealand’s Pharos Festival in November. It was a tad jittery and really rather minuscule, but enough to get the gist of the project.

Cut to April, and advertisements have started to appear on Spotify. “Guava Island, Saturday Night April 13” read one digital billboard, while Glover sings “I’ll see you at the show everyone” to the sound of his acoustic guitar in the background. If this is indeed the case, the project will premiere the day after Glover headlines Coachella as Childish Gambino.

Directed by Hiro Murai – the man behind Atlanta, the FX series which Glover created and acts in, and that aforementioned Childish Gambino video – the film also stars Letitia Wright and Nonso Anozie. In the opening clip, Glover strums his guitar and ponders his surroundings, saying: “We live in paradise, but none of us actually have the time or the means to live here." After that, it’s a romp through the streets of Havana, with Glover gambolling between crowds, parades and gangs on some sort of urgent personal mission. It’s vibrant, atmospheric and movement-heavy – nothing short of what we’ve come to expect from Glover – and indeed Rihanna, who plays his love interest.
