Sanitation workers in India say Modi has failed them
Sanitation workers from India have refused to cast their votes for Prime Minister Modi.
Workers doing the India’s dirtiest job say that Prime Minister Modi has failed them.
Earlier five sanitation workers from India, all of them from the lowest rung were chosen in late February to meet Prime Minister Modi, as he was seen washing the feet and hands of those workers with water, in a gesture to honor the staff that cleans toilets at the ‘Kumb Mela’, a massive gathering in North India.
According to Mr Bezwada Wilson a national convener and head of ‘Safai Karamchari Andolan’ movement, the sanitation workers who die each year from asphyxiation while removing waste from underground drains with their bare hands, have had enough now.
The workers ahead of general elections starting from 11 April 2019, have refused to give their votes to Modi as he has not fulfilled his promises towards them.
Prime Minister Modi promised the sanitation workers to eradicate the practice of manual cleaning from this year.
However he has not stood by his saying, said the workers.
Mr Wilson head of SKA launched a hashtag #StopKillingUs on Twitter and demanded government help workers find jobs that give them dignity.
Earlier more than 600 theater artist including Konkona Sensharma and Naseeruddin Shah urged public to vote against Modi’s party BJP.
The Lok sabha elections in India to be held on April 11, 2019 and will go on till May 19.
